Hall of Heroes

Welcome to the Hall of Heroes, where the past winners of the Nerd Fitness 28-day challenge reside.

Pardon the “beta” look of this page – I’ll be sprucing things up over the next few weeks.

If you are on the hunt for inspiration, look no further than the men and women listed below.  If these rebels can change their lives in 28 days, then so can you.

I only have the last few 28-Day Challenge winners listed, I’ll be going back through to add all of the previous winners as well – thanks for your patience.

Challenge #10: February 2011

mvd6 who kicked ass all across the board in each of his goals for the month of February.

His goals for the month were to stick to his eating plan, stick to his exercise plan, and to have a solid dissertation topic approved by his chair.

Out of the entire month, he only had five or six meals that would be considered unhealthy – planning all of his lunches ahead of time really kept him on track.  He also managed to work out six days a week without fail, made gains in each of his lifts (presses, pull ups, dips, etc.) and as a side effect managed to lose five pounds without even trying.

Oh, and his wife had a baby three weeks ago, which means he did all of this while also being Super Dad.  win.

Challenge #9: January 2011

Unscrupulous Fred who rocked his January Challenge and gave himself an A overall.

His goals were to finish the Couch-2-5k program, drop to 275 pounds, burn 1000 calories on the treadmill in one session, and hold a 45-second plank.

He finished the couch to 5k program, was able to run 5 miles in a row, dropped to 269 pounds (6 pounds ahead of schedule), and burned 1000 calories on a treadmill three times.

Unscrupulous Fred is off to a great start – we’ll get some strength training in there and really see those goals get shattered.

Challenge #8: November 2010

AidanPryde had a month full of win.

“Looking at the month as a whole, if I had to give myself a grade, I would have to give it an A+. I know what you’re thinking, I had two B’s and an F. Well, the A+ that I did get trumps anything else I could have done this month short of cutting a limb off. There is nothing else I could have done in two weeks that has added more years onto my life than quitting those nasty cigarettes. I still worked out, both before and after the quit and the quit took all of the concentration I had. There was none to spare.

I feel so much better today than I did at the beginning of the month. My chest doesn’t hurt, I don’t get as many headaches. I can go for a jog in the cold without feeling like my lungs are going to shatter. I can see a difference in the mirror from the strength training. My arms are bigger, my chest is getting firm. I’m fitting into clothes that I couldn’t just a couple months ago. I went for a run yesterday with snow falling all around me. At the beginning of the month the only reason I would have stepped out into the snow would have been to huddle and shiver while I sucked death into my lungs. Now I was breathing life, my ears filled with the sound of feet on pavement. It was wonderful. I know that I will never again be a smoker and being able to say honestly means that I passed this month’s challenge with flying colors.”

Challenge #7: October 2010

Spezzy destroyed the October challenge.

She accomplished about a million goals (which you can read about here) but it was her strength training goals that really jumped out to me.  That’s right ladies, you can lift heavy weights and look awesome like Spezzy too.

squats: 125lbs (current 105) note: i’d really like to get up to 135 on this one, but i’m not sure if that’s reasonable.
hit 135 for 5×5, and 155 for 5×2 (but not with the full depth i’d have liked, so this will be revisited next challenge)

deadlifts: 155lb (current 135)
hit 215 for 3×2. That’s an 80 lb increase. win.

overhead press: 65 (current 45)
hit 75 for 3×2. that’s 10 over goal.

dips: parallel bar dips – lets get strong enough to do these instead of using benches.
my last dip session went like this: 5×11, 4×2, 3×1

chinups: hanging from deadweight, real chins. pullups would be nice too, but lets focus on chinups this month.
i did three chinups in a row. once, but i did them.

bench press: 2 part goal – a) get over my fear of using a bar for this one. b) i’m using 35lb dumbbells now, so lets try to get up to 45lb db’s (so that’s a total of 20lb gain overall]
blah. by the end i could only hit 90 for 2 reps. i hit 85×5. must work on this more next month.

Challenge #6: September 2010

In his first month of trying a 28-day challenge, DaveInBris pretty much rocked it.

He completely redesigned his diet, eating 95% of his meals in Paleo fashion, dropped a bunch of weight while lowering his body fat percentage, and did more work in a month on setting up a business than most people do in a year.  If you want to see his RIDICULOUSLY analytical self-assessment, check out this thread – it starts about halfway down.
