28-Day Challenge: We’re Halfway There…

So here we are, two weeks into the Nerd Fitness 28-day challenge. Now, I initially created this as personal challenge for myself because I was going on vacation at the end of the month.  However, due to some unexpected circumstances I’m no longer going on that cruise (hey, sh** happens right?) – but there are now like fifty people leveling up their lives alongside me, so HELL YEAH I’M gonna keep this train rollin’.

Nerd Fitness Message Boards

Since officially “unveiling” them fourteen days ago, the Nerd Fitness Message Boards have had exploded (not literally), with over 100 members and 1,000 posts already.

I’m pleasantly surprised and incredibly excited at the amount of great content posted on there in such a short amount of time – I feel like a proud parent watching my fellow nerds helping out each other.  It’s awesome.  If you’re one of the people who has been posting on there, THANK YOU.  I have a feeling that this site and this community is going to become something pretty damn special, so thanks for hopping on at the ground floor.  Honestly, the sky is the limit.

If you haven’t got a chance to check em out yet, take a look and join us!

Steve’s 28-Challenge

So how am I doing? Let’s look back at my goals for this:

  • Gain at least five pounds, hopefully all muscle.
  • Hit the weights hard three times a week.
  • Sleep more.

As of this past Friday I’m already up three pounds – I’m on schedule to gain those five pounds of muscle by the end of this thing.  I’ve been better about eating enough calories on a daily basis – enough to build muscle but not too much to put on excess fat – and I’ve tried to be better about sleeping more.  I still spend too much time on this site and not enough time sleeping, but I am trying to be more focused in my writing so that I can get my work done more quickly and get to sleep earlier.  It’s a work in progress.

Now, I do need to pat myself on the back for this one – despite crappy weather, little sleep, an annoying cough that won’t go away, and one of the worst weeks of my life, I’m proud to say that I haven’t missed one single trip to the gym.  I knew I was being counted on for motivation and consistency, so I did what I needed to do to make it happen.  Yay for public accountability!  You can follow my 28-journey on this thread on the boards.

So, how are YOU doing? Still going strong? Struggling?  Talk it out!

-Steve

I'd love to know how you motivate yourself to get to the gym when you're sick. I got sick last week (not seriously sick, just a bad head cold from the change of weather) and I couldn't get myself there for the life of me!

  • NerdFitness

    Hey Lauren

Well, I wasn't really sick – just a cough that has since gone away. When
you're actually sick, it's important to rest and get healthy before
beginning exercise again or you could just make things worse. Your body
will go to work recovering from the exercise rather than going to work on
getting healthy again…don't compound the problem!

    Hey Steve,

Great post again. I”m sorry to hear you had a shitty week, hopefully this one is great in comparison. Awesome on your 3 lb weight gain!! This challenge has been a god send seriously, because joining up for some kind of contest makes me feel responsible to continue to take part in it. I hope you have one every month , no prize is even necessary! Maybe, just have a picture up of “the member of the month” for the winner , or a simple prize could be you rate and critique their diet and fitness plan to give them a leg up, even though you are sweet enough to do that regardless. phew giant run on sentence eh.

I'm def making progress. I promised to track daily my food, which I have, which is a really big deal for me since I do weight watchers tracking and usually I fall off the wagon 3-4 days into it, and then pig out and start again a week later. I”m not going to say my food intake is exceptional but I am def making improvements and if I eat something bad, I feel guilty, rather than trying to make an excuse for it.
I work out 6 days a week as promised between an hour to two hours each time.
My goal was to lose 10 lbs this month, I don't think at this point it will happen, I've lost 3 so far, but to be honest, I'm not sure my goal was that realistic, perhaps 5 lbs would be more achievable.

    Aw, man…

I wasn't going to go to the gym today, and now I have to. If you can do it, I can do it :)

Good luck with the remaining 14 days! Congratulations on your progress so far. Too bad you can't go on the vacation because you seemed really enthousiastic. Guess it's important to focus on the things that you can do.

I got sick last week so that kinda ruined the momentum with my challenge.
Went to the gym for the first time in a week today and that's always heavy after being sick. I try to keep up my thread in the boards everyday which is motivating. Really reminds you why you do it. I don't know if I'll be able to achieve all my goals… I'll let you know in 14 days;) I'll try my best, that's for sure.

When you are eating correctly and strength training regularly, you may be gaining weight. I know the feeling of gains though. It is temporary and you will lose in a much healthier way.

  • NerdFitness

    Hey Frank,

I'm actually TRYING to gain weight, so I'm quite happy with the 3 pound gain
    :)
