What regime would you suggest? I really enjoyed this article. How often should I be doing weights and can I do them on the same days as intervals, cardio or alone. I did an half ironman last June. The intense long hours of training totally burnt me out...I don't want to do that anymore. I don't have as much time as I used to to train those long hours. My goal right now is to use my exercise as effectiently as possible for the greatest weight loss. What do you think of Beachbody's Insanity and P90X?
Love to hear your advise.

One of the benefits is prevention of injury...you know injury from all that pounding on the treadmill! All the cardio only junkies out there are missing a huge component to fitness. The comments, "just do what you like to do" is so short sighted. We can't have this attitude with eating...
Be smart and DO WHAT IS BEST for your body...that should be enough to "like it."

I know we are talking about calories here, but the benefits of strength training are HUGE! When you alternate between short bouts of very-high-intensity exercise with lower-intensity exercise, your body is able to process lactic acid build-up, therefore reducing fatigue. You are then able to burn calories and fat at a faster rate compared to less intense, longer aerobic exercise.

In it you compare Cardio, HIIT, and Circuit Weight Training. Where does "traditional" weight training fit in on this hierarchy? And do you recommend mixing circuit and traditional training?

Love the article, lots of good information. I did have one question, though. It was once, 3x per week for 30 minutes. It then became 30 minutes 5x per week. 30 Minutes of what? Pretty vigorous exercise...beyond yoga, pilates or race walking. 5x a week is no good because if you fall out of the habit on those 2 days, you might fall off the wagon period.
I'm all over the net trying to find at-home workouts that I can fit into my life. Gyms are not only cesspools of germs, it takes X minutes to get there. I don't like any type of equipment either. I need to find intense strengthening/cardio exercises that I can do at home or in an empty conference room. BTW, my knees are shot...which is one reason I need to eat right and remain thin and strong.

We need to exercise a lot more than was previously suggested.
